Warning Signs of Opioid Addiction

If you think someone in your life has an opioid addiction, then understanding what the signs are is definitely a good idea. Those who are addicted to opioids often do not reach out for help on their own. Even when their addiction is making it so their life is out of control, it is still difficult for them to reach out and ask for help.

This is why it is so important for those who think that someone they know is abusing opioids to understand the signs. When they do, then they will know for sure whether their friend or family member has an addiction.

Opioid addiction

The reason someone would take opioids is to help them cope with any pain they are experiencing. A medical professional can write a prescription for legal opioids for their patients or someone can get them illegally from someone else they know. The fact that opioids can be very addictive means that when it is time for someone to stop, it can be difficult to do. The following are a few signs of opioid addiction:

A change in behavior

Whenever someone is not acting like their usual self, it tends to mean that something is wrong. This often includes not being as outgoing as they used to be, e.g., declining dinner invitations from friends, missing a lot of work, etc.

Taking too much or for too long

When someone is abusing their prescription medicine by taking more than the prescribed amount or when they are taking the opiates for too long a period of time, these are definite warning signs that someone is now addicted to their pain medication. The only way they would be able to get access to more opiates after their prescription has ended is to illegally get them, which is a crime.

They are experiencing withdrawal symptoms

Someone may start to experience withdrawal symptoms — e.g., sweating, moodiness, etc. — before it is time for their next dose. Withdrawal symptoms are not only a sign of addiction, but when they occur, it is also likely someone will want to take more opiates in order to avoid any unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.

Drug addiction treatment

Have any questions about opioid addiction? When someone you care about is addicted to opioids, it is essential that they get the help they need as soon as possible. The longer they are addicted, the more difficult it is going to be for them to stop. As a friend or family member, you can play an important role in them seeking the treatment they need.
