Visiting a Drug Rehabilitation Center is More Common Than You May Think

For many, there is a stigma with the idea of visiting a drug rehabilitation center for treatment. There are several reasons for this. For one, many drug addicts have a hard time admitting that they have a problem. While the extent of the issue may be perfectly clear to friends, family, and co-workers, the addict may find it difficult to understand just how much their addiction impacts everyone around them, beyond their own life.

In this situation, many addicts view those attending drug therapy rehabilitation as someone who is messed up, rather than people in the same situation. It is common to wonder how they could possibly be a part of that group? it is only with true self-reflection, are addicts able to accept their current state and the need to get help.

For others, the thought of seeking treatment is a sign of weakness because they feel like they should be able to stop the addiction on their own. While it is certainly true that you should start this process on your own, getting out of it is a whole different story. Most addicts need help and support to get through this process. We can make it easier by giving you both, and also by prescribing medication that can help during the detoxification phase of the process.

Fast Facts About Visiting a Drug Rehabilitation Center and Substance Abuse

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is where we get much of our data on substance abuse and treatment. In their national survey on drug use and health they found that -

23.5 million persons aged 12 or older were using drugs or alcohol and needing treatment for it. This represents 9.3 percent of the 12 and older population in the United States as of 2009.

2.6 million people received treatment in a drug rehabilitation center or similar facility.

The top reasons that people seek treatment are:

  • Alcohol abuse (41.4 percent).  Nearly half of these cases involved the use of alcohol and another drug
  • Heroin and opiate abuse (20 percent)
  • Marijuana abuse (17 percent)

People of all ages are impacted by drug and alcohol use but the largest age groups (in descending order) are:

  • 20 to 29

  • 50 to 59

How Visiting a Drug Rehabilitation Center Can Help You

When you decide that it's time to take charge of your future and your health, the best thing to do is to visit a drug rehabilitation center to start the process of detoxification and becoming whole again. This is a process. It is not something that will happen overnight or instantaneously. Instead, the process towards recovery is one that needs to be taken seriously and with determination. Our job is to make the process as easy as possible. We do this by prescribing medication to help with the negative side effects of detox and working to provide support.

During the recovery process, you may also need to ensure that you are not surrounded by the same people or environments that led to your addiction in the first place. This may include changing who you spend time with, where you go to eat after work, and more. These are only a few of the situations that need to be discussed when creating a plan for how to keep you clean and sober.
