When dealing with addiction, finding a good drug detox program is crucial for your long-term success. First and foremost, a detox program should be focused on helping you kick your habit. Once the harmful effects of the drugs are out of your system, the program should move on to treating you and training you for recovery.
This can include counseling sessions (individual and group) and behavioral modification exercises. It is also important to find a support group of individuals who are going through the same struggle you are, where you can discuss your difficulties and triumphs. When looking for a drug detox program, make sure you understand what options are available to you.
Types of detox treatment programs
When it comes to treatment for drug addiction, several avenues can be pursued. It is a good idea to be educated on all the options.
Outpatient programs
Outpatient programs are generally the most affordable type of treatment. With outpatient programs, patients consult regularly with an addiction counselor or therapist. The therapist coaches patients on methods and tactics for getting clean, then trains them on behavioral changes to stay clean. They may also do regular group therapy sessions. These private and group sessions take place at regularly scheduled appointments, but outside of those appointments patients are free to do what they wish.
Intensive outpatient programs
An intensive outpatient program is a much more structured approach. As with standard outpatient programs, there are individual therapy and counseling sessions as well as group sessions. Patients are coached on how to get clean and stay clean. The difference, however, is that all of these sessions are longer and more detailed than in regular outpatient treatment. At the end of the day, though, patients go home and can do as they wish.
Short-term inpatient programs (private)
Inpatient programs are when the patient chooses to live at a drug detox facility. This allows patients to remove any negative influences and temptations from their lives.
Being confined to the detox facility prevents any opportunity for relapse. It also provides a supportive environment for focusing on recovery. Like the previously described programs, there are usually regular private and group therapy sessions to treat the patient and aid in recovery. Short-term programs typically last 30 days or less.
Long-term inpatient programs (private)
Long-term inpatient programs work just the same as short-term; however, they last longer. Typically, these programs require residency of at least 60 days. Long-term treatment is the top level of drug detox treatment that can be received. Due to its long-term immersive quality, these inpatient programs tend to have a higher success rate than other programs.
Conclusion
As you pursue your goal of becoming drug-free, finding the most effective drug detox program should be at the top of your list. Attending any kind of treatment program is a step in the right direction. In general, private detox programs offer a more immersive and potentially more successful path to recovery.
