How to Prepare for a Drug Rehab Treatment

Making a commitment to enter a drug rehab treatment can be stressful. Everyday life does not simply pause just because you have made this important step. Just know that everything you are worried about can be taken care of with a little planning. Following are some steps you will want to take to prepare yourself and your life before entering a program.

Before entering drug rehab

You have made the most difficult and important decision of all, to get help. Set yourself up for success by being prepared to deal with the following areas of your life.

Work

If you are employed, you will need to make arrangements with your employer and bring them up to date as to why you will be needing personal time off. The sooner you let your employer know the better as it allows them to make the necessary arrangements to cover for you without putting them in a difficult situation.

Your job will be yours upon return. Drug rehab falls under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) granting you 12 workweeks of leave in a 12-month period to care for a serious health condition.

Family and friends

A supportive community to come back to is essential to your continued success following drug rehab. Make your family and friends aware of how long you will be gone and your desire for their support upon their return.

Ask family and friends to take care of your home, your children and your pets while you are gone. Make them active participants in your recovery by giving them an opportunity to help maintain the areas of your life that depend on your presence.

Often family and friends want to know how they can help during difficult times. Let go of any guilt and know that more than likely they are thrilled you are getting the help you need through drug rehab and are eager to help in any way they can. Let people know where you are going and why. You will want the support system when you return.

Finances

Make arrangements to have your bills paid while you are gone. This responsibility can be handed over to someone you trust or you can set up automatic payments. The last thing you will want when returning from drug rehab is to be overwhelmed by late bills, overdrafts and fees.

Get your finances in order before you leave.

Packing

The drug rehab treatment center will have most of what you need, so only take what is absolutely necessary. Make sure when you pack that you are following the rules of the center. Leave behind reminders of home and your past life. It’s time to start fresh.

Next steps

Making the decision to enter a drug rehab program is one of the most important decisions you will make in your life. Taking proactive steps to reduce stress and eliminate drama that leads to temptation will set you up for future success.

Drug rehab is only the beginning. There you will learn steps and practices that will equip you in living a sober healthier life.
