Common Drug Rehab Treatments [FAQs]

When a person wants to undergo treatment in a drug rehab center, they often have questions about the entire process. In this article, you will find answers to frequently asked questions about drug rehab treatment to help you make an informed decision.

What is detox?

Detoxification means helping a drug user or addict stay away from drugs and handle the withdrawal stage with minimal pain and discomfort. The basic aim of detox is to curb physical addiction and ensure the patient’s safety and comfort. Detox incorporates a comprehensive approach that combines medical supervision with other treatment techniques.

The patient may receive certain drugs to ensure easy withdrawal. When creating a personalized detox treatment plan for the patient, the medical professional will consider factors such as the type of drug, length of addiction period, user tolerance and physical tolerance.

Is it possible to quit without medical assistance?

Although this has been done, it is not advisable for many reasons. Drug withdrawal can have life-threatening symptoms such as hallucinations, heavy seizures or psychosis if the addict tries to get off drugs “cold turkey” without professional assistance. Some substances that cause such effects include alcohol, certain psychotropics, benzodiazepines, methadone and methamphetamine.

Is drug rehab effective?

This question has been debated several times. Millions of people have benefited from drug rehab. However, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), only about 11% of those who require professional treatment get it. The typical result of enrolling in a drug facility is successful completion and a continued lifestyle free of drugs.

It is usually not enough to simply stay off drugs for a few weeks or months. So, while many addicts can quit on their own,  others may need to undergo multiple programs before staying clean. There is no universal system for all addicts. The success of any program depends on the user’s willingness and determination.

What are the different treatment approaches to rehab?

Inpatient and outpatient rehab facilities often use different types of systems to help their patients, including:

  • 12-step programs (based on resources from Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous)
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Moral recognition therapy
  • Faith-based rehab
  • Counseling
  • Communications training

What is the typical duration of rehab?

The time depends on the program and the patient. Some programs are planned to last throughout the person’s lifetime. Generally, a program should not be limited, in order to give the patient the chance to deal with different aspects of addiction.

Is relapse a big problem?

Many patients are often confused about relapse. The best approach is to treat rehabilitation as a lifelong treatment. Some drugs, such as methamphetamine, have a history of low success rate in conventional rehab. Nevertheless, no one is hopeless. If relapse occurs, it merely means that additional work is necessary. A solid foundation would be to combine a comprehensive plan with the willingness and determination of the patient.
